A highly re-engineered lead battery which achieves a high cycle life at high depths of discharge and low costs
Stuart McKenzie, CEO, ArcActive, New Zealand

Energy Storage System (ESS) opportunities are highly sensitive to the Levelised Cost of Storage (LCoS). Lead batteries are a fundamentally low-cost battery technology but economic opportunities have been restricted due to the limited cycle life at high depths of discharge. ArcStore, a highly re-engineered lead battery has achieved an approximately sixfold lifetime increase over a traditional lead battery under an extreme duty cycle 100% depth-of-discharge cycling (BCIS-6) in third party testing.  ArcStore batteries incorporate two core technologies; bipolar battery architecture and fabric structured electrodes. These technologies allow the four key failure modes that normally limit life to be managed providing a high capacity throughput with a low cost construction, thus proving a low LCoS.

This presentation will focus on;

  • The four key failure modes that must be managed to achieve high capacity throughput with high active material utilisation (hence low product costs)

  • How ArcStore manages these failure modes

  • Cycle life test data

  • The ArcStore manufacturing processes
