A new innovative red lead – combining the advantage of tetrabasic seeding with red lead

The new patented product “RL+” is a functionalized red lead combining a tetrabasic lead sulphate (4BS) seeding with the known advantages of the red lead. PENOX has been offering TBLS+® since 2004, and the material supports effective tetrabasic curing with a low addition rate, thanks to the small particle size (d50 = 0.5 to 0.7 µm) of PENOX seeds compared to the powder 4BS additives. RL+ allows a similar effective tetrabasic seeding since the surface of the red lead is pre-coated with very small 4BS seeds. Consequently, the requirements for mixing 4BS seeds in the industrial paste mixing process are reduced, and a more homogenous distribution of the seeding crystals is obtained faster and in a more reliable way.

RL+ offers the following advantages to our customers: i) homogenous 4BS structure of the cured positive active mass (PAM), ii) defined porosity of the PAM, leading therefore to iii) energy-efficient formation, which results in a stable formed PAM with iv) high mass utilization and v) high cycle life performance. The presentation demonstrates the results of the analysis of positive plates in two parts. In the first part, the structural analysis results of the cured and formed plates will be presented, followed in the second part by the results of the electrical tests.


Hamid Ramianpour joined Penox GmbH's R&D team in 2020 as a product development engineer. He received his Master's degree in Materials Science from Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany. His interest in the lead acid industry started with the project between Penox GmbH, TU Ilmenau and Fraunhofer ISC. He has a Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy from Semnan University, Iran.
