As featured on the World Economic Forum (WEF), CBI’s blog on the integral role of lead batteries for EV safety is a big topic spanning the battery, automotive and research sectors.
Electric vehicles are on the rise, as are other low-emission vehicles such as hybrids. Lead batteries play a critical role in these automotive applications as low-voltage EV batteries supporting safety systems.
The world is witnessing a shift to greater levels of electrification and decarbonization, and EVs are a key player in driving this shift. And ELBC is an event at the forefront of these discussions with a dedicated pre-conference workshop and technical sessions focusing on automotive battery developments.
This workshop will include discussions around low-voltage EV batteries – also known as auxiliary 12V lead batteries – a key battery application in the future.
These batteries are critical for ensuring the safety of the vehicle by providing back-up power for safety relevant features such as power steering and brake boosting.
In the event of the failure of the high-voltage propulsion lithium-ion battery, the low-voltage EV battery takes over and powers the safety features of the vehicle to enable the car to safety pull over.
As a technology, lead batteries are highly safe and reliable, and it is vital that the safest technology is used in this application.
This mature industry, which collects lead batteries at end-of-life at rates of almost 100% in Europe and North America, is one of the leading examples of a successful circular economy.
Join us at ELBC next September and stay tuned for more updates on the pre-conference workshop which will bring together global battery experts in the automotive sector to discuss the latest in lead battery innovation for EV applications.
